Statement from Cystic Fibrosis Ireland re Official Opening of New Cystic Fibrosis Paediatric In-patient Facility at Cavan General Hospital

Date of issue: Friday, November 10 2017

Cystic Fibrosis Ireland is delighted to welcome the official opening today (3pm) of the new cystic fibrosis paediatric in-patient facility at Cavan General Hospital by Minister for Health, Simon Harris TD.

This unit is a partnership initiative between Cystic Fibrosis Ireland (CFI), Cavan General Hospital and the HSE. CFI, and in particular its branch members in Cavan, contributed €350,000 to this project, thanks to funds generously donated by the people of Cavan. A further €100,000 was also secured for the project by CFI from National Lottery funding.

Philip Watt, CEO of Cystic Fibrosis Ireland, stated:
"This new facility will provide a state-of-the-art in-patient unit for children and young people with CF in the greater Cavan area. It means that when a child or young person with CF experiences a sudden worsening of their condition that they can be treated with antibiotics and other necessary care in Cavan General Hospital. It also reduces the pressure on the three CF paediatric centres in Dublin that are consistently over-stretched."

Patricia Duffy-Barber, Chairperson of CFI, stated:
"The unit is a tribute to the work of the Cavan Branch of CFI over many years, led by Raymond Dunne and Robert Dunne. A wonderful dimension of the unit is that it will benefit all children - including those without CF - attending the paediatric unit in Cavan General Hospital. The new CF unit facilitated a re-configuration of the entire paediatric unit in the hospital and is thus a win-win for all sick children and young people attending Cavan General Hospital."

The new in-patient unit has two main rooms alongside ensuite bathrooms necessary to reduce the risk of infection and cross-infection. These rooms are built to a much higher standard than most in-patient rooms, and include hepa-filtration of air, and systems to allow for continuing education and entertainment over long stays.
